On May 26, 2021, Alberta released its 3-step plan for reopening and named it ‘Alberta’s Open for Summer Plan.’
The plan outlines how Alberta will ease restrictions based on increasing vaccination rates and decline in cases of COVID-19.
Stage 1 of reopening Alberta starts on June 1, 2021.
The province will stay in each stage for at least 2 weeks to accurately measure data before moving on to the next stage. The reopening may be paused if there is an increase in cases and hospitalizations.
Alberta will release additional details on restrictions before each step.
This blog details the restrictions in each stage relevant to small businesses:
Stage 1: June 1
- Stage 1 begins two weeks after 50% of Albertans 12+ have received one dose, and hospitalizations are below 800 and declining.
- The first stage allows for restaurants to seat 4 people per table on patio from the same household or 2 close contacts for those living alone.
- Retail can increase to 15% capacity limits (with social distancing).
- Personal and wellness services can reopen but by appointment only.
- Distancing and masking requirements remain in effect.
- Outdoor physical, performance and recreation activities – up to 10 distanced people, all ages, are also allowed.
Stage 2: Mid-June
- The second stage begins 2 weeks after 60% of Albertans age 12+ have received one vaccine dose.
- Hospitalizations are below 500 and declining.
- Restaurants can serve 6 people per table, indoors or outdoors.
- Retail can increase to 30% capacity limits (with social distancing).
- Gyms, fitness studios, and indoor classes open for solo and drop-in activities and with 3-metre distancing.
- Arenas, cinemas, theatres, museums, art galleries and libraries may open at 30% capacity.
- Personal and wellness services can resume walk-in services.
- The work-from-home order is lifted but still recommended.
- Distancing and masking requirements remain in effect.
- Youth activities (play centres, day camps, overnight camps) resume operations with restrictions
Stage 3: Early July
Stage 3 begins 2 weeks after 70% of Albertans age 12+ have received one vaccine dose.
All restrictions are lifted, including the ban on indoor social gatherings.
However, isolation requirements for confirmed cases of COVID-19 and some protective measures in continuing care settings stay.
