A new entitlement that will be of particular interest to working parents comes into effect from Friday November 1st.
An estimated 60,000 working parents will be entitled to an additional two weeks’ paid parent’s leave under the new scheme.
Ts & Cs
This latest family-friendly entitlement comes with a few conditions that both you and your employees need to be aware of:
- Parent’s leave must be taken in the first year of the child’s birth or adoption.
- Parent’s leave is only available to parents of children born on or after November 1st 2019.
- Parent’s leave must be taken in one two week block or two separate one week blocks.
- Parent’s leave is non-transferable between parents.
The Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection will pay an associated benefit payment at the same rate as maternity benefit, which is €245 per week.
Parent’s leave is an additional state benefit on top of existing employee entitlements to maternity, paternity, unpaid parental leave and adoptive leave.
This means you’ll need to update your policies if you have not already done so. You’ll also have to let staff know about this new state benefit.
