IThe Health & Safety Stationery section of SafetyWise holds a full catalogue of all checklists which can be used to support specific risk assessments. This will help demonstrate to Enforcing Authorities that not only have you looked at the general day-to-day hazards affecting your organisation but you have addressed the specific issues outlined below:
CSR - Confined Space Risk Assessment: Confined spaces are significantly more hazardous than ‘normal’ workplaces. The enclosed nature always magnifies the hazards and risks from the work being done. Injuries during work in confined spaces include burns from explosions and fire, injuries, illness from chemical contact, loss of consciousness in an oxygen depleted atmosphere and injuries sustained from falls and the manual handling and manipulation of equipment. Other hazards from confined space work include poor posture, noise, the use of electricity, mechanical equipment and dust.
CYPIC - Children and Young Persons Information Checklist: Where children and young persons are employed, health and safety management legislation requires risk assessments to be carried out for the work activities in which they are engaged. The legislation requires that you, the employer, ensure that children and young persons are protected from all the usual workplace risks and those which are due to their mental limitations (lack of knowledge and experience), physical limitations (the body is not fully developed) and/or immaturity (requiring further supervision).
DSEQ(UK) - Display Screen Equipment Assessment Questionnaire: Health and safety legislation relating specifically to DSE requires that risks to individual users at their workstations are assessed and that measures are taken to reduce the risk of injury or ill health to each user arising from their use.
HSRA - Hazardous Substances Risk Assessment: For the purposes of health and safety legislation, chemical agents and substances are defined as any chemical element or compound on its own or mixed. The substance may occur naturally or be manufactured. Regulations apply to every use of every substance or agent including its release to the atmosphere or as waste, whether it was produced intentionally or not and whether or not it was produced for sale
MHIC - Manual Handling Information Checklist: Injuries associated with manual handling are lower back pains and upper limb disorders (ULDs); problems with the shoulder and arm, including the forearm, elbow, wrist, hand and fingers. ULDs can include neck pain. Occasionally these symptoms are the result of a single event - such as trying to lift a very heavy load or a heavy and unbalanced load. They are more commonly the result of the continued repetitive lifting of a load.
NEMA - New and Expectant Mothers Risk Assessment Checklist: Pregnancy affects different women in different ways. Some women can cope easily and others have problems all the way through their pregnancy. This is a factor that must be considered when dealing with this situation. You must also remember that pregnancy should not be considered as an illness.
In the workplace there are hazards which may cause injury or ill-health to the new or expectant mother, the foetus or the baby. These include physical hazards; chemical hazards; biological hazards and radiation. This checklist should be completed by both the pregnant woman and a supervisor as part of the new and expectant mothers risk assessment process.
The above checklists are available in Word so you can easily complete and attach them into the online Risk Assessments on SafetyWise. Alternatively, you can download and print off the PDF for them to be completed and scanned in at a later date.
