Here’s what I know: a degree isn’t everything

Two-thirds of employers believe their workforce lacks skills, according to CIPD.

Yet, 57% of employers still scan CVs looking out for degrees. What does this tell us?

It’s not all about the degree. A degree doesn’t guarantee someone can do a job. And if a BA is your deciding factor, you’re only scratching the surface of the talent pool.

Businesses are already dealing with a skills shortage in a Great Resignation crisis. More workers are leaving their jobs – and more employers are falling short of skilled staff…

Now is not the time to be overlooking talented, degreeless candidates.

For certain roles, you might expect a relevant degree. But you should consider a wider range of qualifications when you recruit. Don’t underestimate the unconventional.

If anything, applicants who have chosen to take another route might bring more experience and more relevant skills.

There’s a lot of value in apprenticeships. They’re becoming a popular alternative to university. They provide on-the-job training, a wage, and study at the same time.

If you’re worried about staff being underskilled, there are always ways to upskill. Do you offer training and development opportunities? If not, it’s something to think about. What’s to stop you from setting up an apprentice scheme yourself?

When you help your workers level up, you keep them happy and loyal. Plus, you’re likely to attract new talent interested in what you have to offer.

The bottom line is this. We need to consider everything an applicant is bringing to the table. It’s not just about their education.

Do they have potential? A willingness to learn? Transferrable skills? These qualities are just, if not more, important.

Be open-minded when you recruit. Provide your new starter with an opportunity to grow, and they’re likely to grow your business in return.

Need support with hiring an apprentice? Be aware that apprentices don’t have the same rights as full-time staff. So, they need different contracts.
